Summer is always so much fun, but I love Fall for so many other reasons. One of them is apple picking. Thankfully, weather has been kind so far, and we were able to make number of apple picking trips this year.
As much as apple picking is exciting, when you look at the all those bags full of apples you start scratching your head thinking, what to do with all these apples. Well, how ’bout some delicious homemade applesauce!
Very first time I made this applesauce, I kept thinking to myself, why I didn’t make this earlier. I have always used store bought applesauce in my recipes, that was until I made this version. It is so delicious, simple to make and take only few minutes to make.
With only three main ingredients, it can be made in a jiffy. Kind of apples don’t really matter. I have used Fuji, McIntosh, Granny Smith and Gala apples every different time.
You will feel a little delicious tartness with Granny Smith. Gala and Fuji are on the sweeter side. As to which apples to pick – always pick the one that’s more ripe, and you think you won’t end up eating.
After all you can’t really tell the ripeness of the apple once it’s cooked.
The process of making applesauce – Simply start by peeling the skin and cutting out the cores the apples. My vegetable peeler comes in handy when peeling the skin. To cut out the core, I use this apple corer.
Cutting the apple is another important step in determining how long it will take to cook this applesauce. If you cut larger thicker pieces, they will take slightly longer, whereas think little pieces will take less time.
If you like small apple pieces in your applesauce, you can leave them as is. I mash them a little with my potato masher, and make the mushy version.
Some of the recipes that I made using store bought applesauce, I made again with this fresh homemade applesauce. Oh what a difference. These banana carrot muffins tasted totally different in a good way.
This being a holiday season, this applesauce makes a great homemade gift idea. Simply pour into a festive mason jar, tag with and cut out a holiday printable, tie with bakers twine and you have a thoughtful gift for a loved one.
